Early Years Foundation Stage
By the end of EYFS (Reception), Children will have been given the opportunities to explore using different medias and tools in different scales to make marks, colour mix and investigate effects that can be created. They will have been given the opportunity to look at art from different artists and observe objects and still life and draw from these observations and from their imagination. Children will have been given the opportunity to create transient art and explore how colours and objects around us change through the seasons and weather.
Key Stage 1
By the end of KS1 (Year 2), children will have a basic understanding of some famous artists and should have had the chance to explore using various media and techniques when printing and using textiles. The children will be able to draw human bodies and have an awareness of the size of objects in images when they are near or far. They will be able to use 2D shapes to create 3D forms and choose the correct tools to create desired effects in malleable materials. Children will have an awareness of primary, secondary, complementary, harmonious and tertiary colours.
Lower Key Stage 2
By the end of Lower KS2 (Year 4), children will be able to describe and replicate the work of famous artists and designers work. Children will be able to draw realistic looking animals and humans body forms. They will have an understanding of how to make their sketches look 3 dimensional using lines, shapes, space, shading and patterns. They will have an understanding of a spectrum of colour and how to add black and white to produce tints and shades of colour. They will also be able to explore how emotions can be expressed using colour. In sculpture, the children will have the knowledge of various techniques which will help them to begin making simple 3D sculptures. They will have explored art from different cultures and will be beginning to understand how art can portray the traditions of these cultures.
Upper Key Stage 2
By the end of Upper KS2 (Year 6), Children will know, be able to describe, replicate and be inspired by famous artists, designers and craft makers. They will have experimented, invented and created effects, meaning, emotion and purpose in the art they have made. They will be able to annotate and think creatively and critically about decisions they make during the process of making artworks. In drawing, they will be able to observe, notice and sketch complex details using lines, shapes, patterns, space and texture to create depth to their artwork. In sculpture, the children will be able to create more complex 3D sculptures inspired by famous sculpture artists. They will also have mastered and be proficient in different methods and techniques when working in print and textiles.
