Writing Intent

English is the foundation that underpins everything we do at Methley Primary School We adopt a thematic approach to the teaching of writing. We enable our children to make links, write for a real purpose, consider their audience and develop a love and understanding of language. After embedding the structure, language and grammatical features of a text, we enable our writers to add flair and creativity to their independent writing.

We provide opportunities for the children to persevere and strive to be the best writers they can be through a rich and balanced curriculum.

Implementation

We teach writing using the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach. First our children write a cold task, we then imitate a chosen text, innovate collaboratively practising key skills and then apply the skills to an independent task. A cold task provides children an opportunity to show off their writing skills and informs the planning of the unit. Imitate begins with a ‘hook’ which engages the children and allows them to think about what learning may follow. Children learn a text through actions, text mapping, drama, hot seating, story wanding, sequencing and many other activities.

This allows children to read as a reader and learn the text. Next we ‘box up’ which allows children to read as a writer and explore and create a writing tool kit. Children are motivated through a variety of different activities, which are inclusive to all. The innovate stage allows the opportunity to plan, write and edit the key skills of the genre. Children persevere as they aim to use the WAGOLL’s and models to write effectively.

The final stage is to allow the children to demonstrate their success by planning, writing and editing independently using a clear success criteria. Furthermore, they will self-edit and celebrate their successes. Throughout the whole process, our children will experience inclusive, fun and interesting activities based on the fundamentals of writing from the National Curriculum (spelling, punctuation and grammar)
